Photo and race information can be found at : : cdamarathon john and i ran the 27th annual coeur d'alene marathon over memorial day, with a field of about 300 runners. cda is a fun resort town and the lake is beautiful. the town currently has lots of painted moose statues to be auctioned off ; , similar to the horse statues in billings. we stayed at the coeur d'alene resort on the lake, known for its floating golf green island in the lake that golfers have to take a boat to play it! ; . packet pickup, as well as the race start finish was at north idaho college, a pretty campus with lots of trees. race shirts were nice ooks micro fiber long sleeve shirts, rather than the cotton shirts you get at many races. we had a nice lunch at cricket's steakhouse and oyster bar on sherman avenue, the "main drag" in coeur d'alene. some michigan-arizona friends of ours were there to run the half marathon, so we met up with them for dinner the night before the marathon at tito macaroni's. the temperatures on race day ranged from 45-60, ideal really. some wind, but not much, and it started raining when we were at about the 7 mile mark and rained the rest of the marathon with a couple short breaks. the rain was never hard though and wasn't really a big deal i'll take rain over a hot marathon any day! ; . the half marathon had over 800 runners. they had lots of portajons at the start area and john and i were both the first to use the portajons we selected with no wait at all.that doesn't often happen and was a very pleasant surprise! the course starts off with a loop around the campus and along the lakeshore, then through the pretty city park and down sherman avenue past the moose statues. miles 2 through about 11 are in residential parts of coeur d'alene, relatively flat though not entirely. miles 11-22 were the prettiest part of the course, on the "centennial trail" also called coeur d'alene lake drive ; .lots of views of the lake, eagles overhead, and rocky bluffs to one side. it is an out and back section of 5 + miles each way. it passes the coeur d'alene resort golf course and marina. this section, while definitely the prettiest, is also the hilliest! rolling hills the whole way, with one fairly steep one called "bennett bay hill". the half marathoners turned on this hill, while the marathoners continued on to "higgins point" and marina for our turnaround. john and i ran fairly close together through 17 miles, with john usually in the lead, but well within sight. once we did the turnaround at mile 17, i passed john, giving him a pat on the behind and asking how he was doing. it was a brief encounter and i didn't see him again till the finish! there weren't a lot of spectators on the course, but aid stations were great and quite enthusiastic perhaps because they had a "spirit award", which the aid station manned by girl scouts won ; . i enjoyed the "red hot mamas" on the course in their wigs and costumes dancing to "mony, mony"! john enjoyed the two belly dancers! the last 3-4 miles wind through downtown, along the lake, past the coeur d'alene resort, through city park again and around the campus of north idaho college again. i finished in 4: 11: 03 which was good enough to win my age division by a mere 11 seconds! ; . john finished in 4: 20: 50. after much appreciated hot showers at our hotel, we met our friends at o'shay's for salmon chowder, a cute irish place with guinness posters and photos of ireland covering the walls. john and dave, appropriately, drank guinness. after some late afternoon relaxing in our hotel room, we met a laser surgeon that john works with who lives just outside coeur d'alene ; and his family at the hayden lake country club for a wonderful dinner and evening there. the laser surgeon he works with had run the half marathon. he had planned on taking us for a boat ride and to their cabin on hayden lake, but the weather didn't cooperate, as the rain continued! we did get to see a beautiful rainbow over hayden lake during dinner. monday we had breakfast at java coffee and caf in cda and took our time driving back to billings, with plenty of stops to stretch the sore legs! we visited old mission state park in cataldo, idaho oldest standing building in idaho, built in 1850's ; , did the pintlar scenic drive in montana with a stop at an old fashioned soda fountain in phillipsburg! ; and had an early dinner in bozeman. the drive was beautiful! i'd recommend the cda marathon and i know some rim runners will be doing the ironman in cda the end of june. several people we met during the marathon were using the marathon as training for the ironman. also heard that some runners had run the boise marathon the day before cda! "just" the one marathon was plenty for us.

"ready!" replied henry. "toot! toot!" without any apparent mechanism, the two wooden trains the ghost twins had assembled on the tracks started to move. each made surprisingly loud sounds appropriate to the startup of a steam-driven locomotive: the whoosh of steam pulsing out of the cylinders and into the smokestack, the scream of the whistles, and the smacking of the couplings as the engine jerked the train into motion. it was pretty cool, if you liked trains. within moments the two toy trains were moving at a jaunty pace along the tracks, trailing ghostly smoke that disappeared a few seconds after emission. "oh oh!" said henry. "the signalman is fast asleep!" he knocked over a tiny blockhouse next to a switch, just as one of the speeding trains crossed it. "stop the train! stop the train!" said orville, laughing. "it's too late!" said henry. "stop your train!" "my train can't stop, it's the express! i'm coming through!" "no you're nooootttt!!" screamed henry. both ghosts were giggling gleefully; the two trains came round opposite corners of the outer track, heading full tilt at each other, tooting their whistles wrathfully but with little effect. "there they go!!!" said orville. smash!!! pow!!!! the two trains plowed into one another, in a violent collision that sent train cars and parts flying in all directions. it appeared the tender was really.
