By: laura nichols teachers and staff filtered out of the surprise faculty meeting with looks of bewilderment painted on their faces. they stood in clusters, talking in hushed tones about what they just heard. soon, the word had spread throughout the school and around the district. the captain had announced he was leaving the ship he masterfully navigated for three years. mr. sanville made the decision to take the position as the director of secondary education in the chadds-ford unionville area school district, but not before leaving a lasting impact on the marple newtown senior high school faculty, staff, students, and community that will never be forgotten. "he has a real positive attitude, and gotten to know the students" says mrs. stewart, one of the secretaries in the main office who worked with mr. sanville every day. all of the secretaries in the main office were in accordance when it came to the upbeat atmosphere mr. sanville created within the walls of marple newtown. "he works well with the faculty and staff, " says mrs. foreman, "he was a motivator--he brought school spirit back." mrs. wienckowski added that he "raised the morale [and] it was the `little things' that he did for the school. he was fair to all the teachers. i'm going to miss working for him, but he'll be good in his new career." she added. mr. sanville's positive influence reached past the main office and into every corner of the school, from the classroom to extra-curricular activities and more. he always made time to meet the needs of all students, and kept his appointments. he made ever member of the school feel important, greeting them each morning, eagles coffee cup in hand. "he appreciated open lines of communication, and is interested in everything going on in the school, " says dr. itzko, teacher and student council advisor, an organization that works very close with mr. sanville. "it's also nice to hear about his eagles experience every sunday, " dr. itzko adds, laughing. mr. sanville easily gained favor among faculty and students alike through his avid eagles fanaticism. mr. sanville created a high level of morale many faculty members had never before experienced at marple newtown. he is a leader who inspires others to lead, making everyone feel important. to say he will be greatly missed is an understatement, but the feelings of the entire school and community are best expressed through the eloquent words of mr. williams, a veteran english teacher and club sponsor at marple newtown: "mr. sanville created an atmosphere of confidence, freedom, and responsibility. he was more than a principal; he was a friend to marple newtown.
